Southwest Steel
Casting Company has setup numerous
quality practices to insure customers receive
high quality castings per their specifications.
To achieve this goal the following types
of testing are preformed:
► Chemical Testing
► Non Destructive Testing
► Physical Testing
► Sand Testing
Chemical Testing
Chemical testing analysis is required to
ascertain the chemical composition of a
heat of steel. Chemical testing at Southwest
Steel is done with an Optical Emission Spectrometry.
Non Destructive
Testing
Non Destructive Testing is a descriptive
term used for the examination of materials
and components in such a way that allows
materials to be examined without changing
or destroying their usefulness.
Physical Testing
"Physical" testing is performed by Southwest
Steel as a means of demonstrating/verifying
conformance to the required mechanical properties.
Typical physical tests performed include
tensile testing and Charpy V-Notch impact
testing.
Sand Testing
One of the principle components of making
a quality casting is the preparation of
the sand into which molten metal is poured.
To that end, Southwest Steel Casting Company
operates a laboratory for the testing of
sand to meet AFS standards and which conforms
to Southwest Steel's ISO-9001 procedures.
In order to conduct the afore mention testing
properly, Southwest Steel has three additional
quality practices;
► ISO-9001:2000
►
Pressure Equipment Directive
► Training & Certification
ISO-9001:2000
ISO-6001:2000 certification Governs procedures
under which castings are made and inspected.
Southwest Steel Casting Company achieved
certification to ISO-9002 on December 26,
1996. On November 29, 2003, Southwest Steel
successfully completed the transition audit
to the new revision of the ISO-9000 series
of standards, ISO-9001:2000.
Pressure
Equipment Directive
The Pressure Equipment Directive of the
EU sets out the standards for the design
and manufacture of pressure equipment.
The Directive concerns manufacturers of
items such as vessels pressurized
storage containers, heat exchangers,
steam generators, boilers, industrial
piping, safety devices and pressure
accessories.
Training & Certification
At Southwest Steel Casting Company, all
inspectors performing inspection are trained
and certified per recommended practice ASNT
SNT-TC-1A. This is a worldwide organization
for establishing guidelines for training
certification of NDT personnel
